Brookfield Hackney Stud  was formed in 1965 by Joe Peters and named by Joe’s wife Ellen.  The stud has been the country’s leading breeders and producers of Hackney horses and ponies for the last 43 years, and has an unrivalled consistent record of success in the show ring.

In 1979 and 1999 Joe won the Euren Perpetual Gold Cup for the breeder gaining the highest number of point’s in-hand and harness classes at the Hackney Breed Show.  At the same show he won the Marden Perpetual Cup in 1971, 1979 and 2002.  At the 1981 National Hackney How he won the George Worboys Special trophy for the champion showman and handler.  In 1976 he was the first person to breed, train exhibit and qualify 3 hackneys for the Horse of the Year Show in the same year.

When he offered to lend his services to other exhibitors as a trainer, it was left to daughter Pauline to take up the reins in the amateur classes.  She did so aged 15, winning top amateur classes at the breed show with Brookfield Fan tasy and Brookfield Harvest Moon, plus the ladies cup and best whip.  In the same Championship at the Wembley Royal International Horse Show with Brookfield Harvest Moon.  (The only time Pauline had seen her mother Ellen drunk in her life, imagine what Joe looked like!).

In 1999 Pauline became the first lady to win the George Worboys Trophy like her father before her.

Having triumphed 5 times as winner of the Harness Horse of the Year, in 2002 Joe retired Sheeza Lady in the ring as champion.  As fate would have it this was the last time that Joe showed in the hackney ring as he was taken ill March 2003 and lost his fight for life in September 2003.

Since then, Pauline, Jimmy, Joe Jnr. and Melita have taken over the mantle of running the stud and they have continued to breed, train and exhibit in the show ring.

The family showed for the first time after losing their father at the breed show, taking 4 horses.  The highlight at this poignant time was when Spanish Lady won the supreme animal in hand – a first for this wonderful stud and one of the only championships to escape Joe’s grasp.

Success came again in harness at the 2005 Royal Windsor Show when Pauline drove Brookfield Showtime to win the novice pony class.

In 2006 Brookfield Stud won the Breeders cup again at the breed show with Brookfield Classic Lady andBrookfield Spanish Lady.  Both were supreme mares in the pony and horse sections and they also won the Iris Gates award for best conformation.

In October 2006, Ellen lost her fight for life and joined Joe.  A remarkable lady, Ellen was the backbone for ALL Joe’s hobbies and business ventures and she supported him for 49 years in whatever made him happy – where you saw one the other was always nearby.

As parents of 3 high achieving children, Joe and Ellen supported them in their chosen sports at venues all over the world.  All 3 represented England in Sport – Pauline in netball, and Jimmy and Joe Jnr. in boxing.

Jimmy, his wife Melita, Joe Jnr. and his wife Claire have added 5 beautiful children to the clan.  Joe and Ellen adored their grandchildren and were very proud of them, but sadly will not see them grow up into young men and women.
